Seventh-day Adventist Schools offer windows through which students can see the light of faith and visions of academic opportunity. One of these windows is the school library. From a faith perspective, the library is uniquely situated in the school to offer many windows into faith issues. And in terms of academic opportunity, studies show that a good school library positively affects student achievement. Students achieve better if their school libraries are run by dedicated and trained staff, have up-to-date collections, and are engaged in teaching information literacy skills.

Most 21st century student library users are very confident of their research and inquiry skills. Many of them are not even aware that they need to go beyond Wikipedia and simple natural language Google searches. They need to be coaxed into understanding the difference between "looking it up" on the Internet and quality inquiry-based searching. So how do school teacher-librarians lead their students to locate quality print and electronic reference sources? Robert DuBose will present some of his strategies and encourage the group to share information on this vital information literacy issue.

Writing in 1909, Sam Foss in "Some Cardinal Principles of a Librarian's World" said, "A dollar bill that never circulates is not worth as much as a cent that keeps moving. Nearly every librarian ought to double the circulation of his books..." A lofty goal, but how do you get your faculty and students to use and value the resources and services that you offer? First, we will look at some of the basic principles of successful marketing and some strategies that have worked in school libraries. Second, we will break into small groups and you will be given an opportunity to discuss concerns, formulate plans for change, and share things that have worked for you. Books that sit on the shelf and databases that are never used are not worth much. What have you done to get those feet in the door? What are you doing to get your students and faculty using the resources and services that you offer? We will learn from each other.

Continuing its effort to increase access to information and various archival and special collections house within the University Libraries, Loma Linda University recently purchased the ContentDM Digital Asset Management software. This presentation will offer a glimpse into the various projects undertaken to date, explain a bit of our setup and production procedures and decision-making processes, show many examples, and talk about ideas for future projects and where we go from here. It's all about access and managing our digital assets.

Digital Imaging and Copyright Issues / Warren Johns, Loma Linda University

Any copying of digital images and posting such on a library's web page must come under the watchful eye of U.S. copyright laws. The librarian must walk a circuitous route between the various stipulations of the legal code, much like going through a maze. Permissions to copy photographs/images need not be obtained for those created prior to 1923 or if more that 70 years have elapsed from the death of the image's creator. In lieu of obtaining permission for images still under copyright, a library may post a "thumbnail" of the image under the fair useage provision of the law. Thus far, the usage of thumbnails have survived all legal challenges, as for example in those posted on Amazon.com. This presentation will demonstrate that the usage of larger-than-thumbnail images on a library's website can be permissible if certain provisions are met.

Issues affecting classroom uses of copyrighted materials such as showing films, playing recordings, preparing course packs (anthologies), and making copies to put on reserve will be covered. Discussion will include a look at statutory guidelines, and the doctrine of fair use and its use/abuse in academic settings. Current case examples will be cited and reliable sources of information will be identified.

Online learning environments created by tools such as Moodle and Elluminate, are part of the Web 2.0 trend and create learning opportunities never possible before. This panel discussion will feature two such products: Moodle, an open source course management program, and Elluminate, a meeting/conference software program. While each tool is unique, both are effective in bringing students and teachers together in ways which compliment classroom learning. Each presenter will give either a live or simulated demonstration of the product they are discussing as well as share how the product has enhanced their teaching or learning experience.

As a liaison librarian to the School of Allied Health, I am faced with disparate programs in different departments. I wanted to explore various Web 2.0 tools available to meet the needs of the departments. This paper will demonstrate a variety of Web 2.0 technologies available that can be used for outreach, connect with users, and extend library services.

During the Fall 2007 quarter, certain departments in the School of Allied were selected. I wanted to take the concept of the resource guide and target the resources to the information needs in their domain. Specific tools include Del.icio.us, Pageflakes, and others.
