By Harvey Brenneise
As you will see elsewhere in this issue, the planning process for the annual conference at Newbold College in England this summer is proceeding. This conference will focus on the twin themes of electronic access and the international aspects of Seventh-day Adventist librarianship. We will work hard, but there will also be a few chances to "play." I hope to see many of you there.
In my last column, I promised to discuss what I see as future possibilities, even imperatives, for the Seventh-day Adventist Periodical Index. As most of you know, the database is now (mostly) loaded into JeWeL, the local electronic catalog system at Andrews University, and is available to the world by telnetting to library.libr.andrews.edu. I will enumerate below what I see as some of the future tasks in making this database as useful as possible. The electronic index currently includes data from 1983-1995, plus part of 1980 and all of 1981.
Holly will be able to continue this job, which has already begun. An obvious task is to complete database cleanup and do authority work on it. Because data which we loaded was produced by 3 indexers using 2 computer systems at 2 institutions, a number of irregularities were introduced into the database. This becomes obvious when one looks at the entire database as a whole rather than as individual years in a printed database. In the past, the index was seen as "cast in cement" once and then forgotten. We now have the capability of correcting and updating not only past errors, but changes in indexing policies, headings, etc. In addition, authority work needs to be done on both names and subject headings and these authority records entered into the database so that users can see and use the cross references. This cleanup work has begun, and so far is being carried on by Dan Drazen, the editor, as well as a student worker, Holly Van Buren.
Another obvious task is to key records into the electronic database from the printed indexes for the years that the index was produced manually. When cleanup is a bit further advanced, it is my hope that Holly will be able to continue this job, which has already begun.
Another dream of mine is to begin retrospective indexing of the vast holdings of SDA periodicals going back to the first issue of the Review & Herald, and even to the Millerite publications. While some of this may be able to be done by the index staff, now that we are down to a single employee (the editor) it is unlikely that this will proceed very fast without additional help. I am hopeful that I can find several retired librarians or others who would be willing to help. As some readers will recall, there are still also two "gaps" in the indexing for the 1970s that should be filled electronically.
Perhaps the most exciting thing about having the index available over the Internet is that it is not only available for use by anyone with Internet accessibility, but it can also be contributed to by anyone on the Internet (who, of course, has received proper authorization to do so). Experimentally, we have been trying this with obituary records, both from Walla Walla College (thank you Sheila Clark) and La Sierra University (thank you Vera May Schwarz). It makes little difference whether the person enhancing the database is 5 feet from the computer or 5,000 miles. I hope that we will be able to find capable volunteers with Internet access (and this could include doing work at home via a modem to a local Internet node and then to the computer at Andrews) and work out proper procedures so that some of this work can proceed. If you are such a person or know of someone, do not hesitate to contact me (brneise@andrews.edu). If no one contacts me, I'll go looking for you!!
One of the first examples of SDA cooperation in indexing was the cooperative SDA periodical index (done on cards). We now have the capability of sharing the same sort of information electronically, and I hope we don't miss this opportunity.
Another goal of this index, which includes both the SDA Periodical Index itself and SDA Obituary Index (developed cooperatively under the leadership of the Adventist Heritage Center at Andrews), is to complete the obituary indexing in the near future. Again, this will be most easily accomplished via the Internet.
Other types of data that would be useful in this index are indexing of major "unofficial" SDA-related publications, and articles about SDAs in the "secular" press. It would also be nice to index more of the non-English SDA press.
We must also look in the future to linking the index to the full text of SDA publications. Many of these are already being produced in electronic form, and we need to negotiate with the publishers to electronically archive these data in the index so that we may not only be able to search them by keyword but also display the full text of articles.
The future is rapidly approaching where we will be able to share large amounts of information via the developing international information superhighway. Let us make sure that the information we make available in our corner of that highway is of the highest quality and is as comprehensive as possible.

by Jim Ford
The Andrews University Adventist Heritage Center is now one of well over 1,000 subscribers to the SDA's on-line section of CompuServe, the international electronic data base. Beginning in July 1994, the General Conference was granted a section where news and information could be shared with the membership.
There are fundamental differences of opinion between many librarians and the General Conference over the choice of a commercial vendor versus the Internet as evidenced by some of the discussion at the 1994 ASDAL conference. Be that as it may, the resources available on CompuServe can be of great value to librarians as they serve the needs of their patrons for Adventist-related materials.
In late fall of 1994, technical difficulties were overcome and the Andrews University Adventist Heritage Center joined CompuServe. Access is via the campus network to the Internet, not a conventional modem. I am basically computer illiterate when it comes to new fangled things, so I appreciate the availability of the Windows interface (WinCIM). If you are used to the Windows environment you will feel fairly comfortable using it to access CompuServe. It even provides a counter to let you know how long you've been connected.
I have not used the Service a lot yet, but will use it more as time passes. Thus far I've downloaded the full text of the General Conference Annual Council and North American Division Year-End Meeting devotionals, as well as a number of items related to the October 22, 1844 celebrations. Should you also wish to have copies of several different news sheets from the GC/NAD these are also accessible.
It is not the point of this brief article to review CompuServe, but rather to inform ASDAL members of the fact that we are successfully accessing the service via the Internet. We have a business account set up to care for the financial aspects. Currently, there is only one user of the Service in the Library. However, there is talk of perhaps expanding it to the Information Service (Reference) staff.
Jim Ford is Curator of the Adventist Heritage Center at Andrews University.
1995 ASDAL Conference--the first ever to be held outside North America
The theme of this year's conference is "The Global Electronic Village: Sharing Human and Information Resources." Plans are for making this conference one of the best ever. Those who have not yet registered, a form is included in this issue of the newsletter.
Guest presenters from Australia, Europe and the U.S. will provide an international perspective on the conference theme. Speakers from the U.S. include Gilbert Abella, Chairman of the Department of Public Services, La Sierra University; Keith Clouten, Director James White Library, Andrews University;Taylor Ruhl, Dean, Library & Information Services, Regent University.
As you will see from the preliminary schedule we will be very busy, but built into the program will be time for visiting sites of interest to librarians. This conference will provide lots of opportunity to share ideas, discuss mutual problems, find ways of cooperatively resolving many of them, and make new contacts.
London is a city of contrasts. The Britannica, 1992 puts it this way "It is a marvelous melange of ancient elegance and modern efficiency, of outdated practices and newfangled irritations, a place where for 1,000 years tradition has been honoured and innovation has been essential."
Among all the many museums, galleries, churches, cathedrals, monuments, towers, and palaces are numerous gardens and parks--Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens, Embankment Gardens, St. James Park, and Syon Park to name a few. For those who may be interested in shopping, the most important shopping areas are on Oxford Street, Regent Street, and the Burlington Arcade. And there is, of course, Harrods, Britain's largest department store.
If you are interested in pomp and pageantry, then London is the place to be. There are literally hundreds of ceremonies performed each year. To list a few-- Changing of the Guard, Mounting the Guard, Trooping the Colour, and Ceremony of the keys.
We hope that many of you have already made or are making plans to attend ASDAL in such a fascinating country. Those planning the conference have promised that it will be an exciting one.

Ackerman, Robert J. Silent sons. New York: Simon & Schuster, 1993.
Allen, Marvin and Jo Robinson. In the company of men: a new approach to healing for husbands, fathers & friends. New York: Random House, 1993.
Farrell, Warren. The myth of male power: why men are the disposable sex. New York: Simon & Schuster, 1993.
In a recent visit to a bookstore I browsed the section on gender studies, where I noted that approximately 90% of the books were on feminism, and no more than 10% were in the relatively new area of gender studies devoted to male gender studies. The above three books are all notable, and at least two of them are important additions to the genre.
Silent Sons is perhaps the most clinical/academic of the three, and is based on quantitative research. The author is a psychologist who has studied men who grew up in dysfunctional families (alcoholic, abusive, etc.) And why they have become "silent sons" in dealing with their psychological pain. It is also a self-help book for those men and their families. This book will make a contribution to the male studies/psychology sections of public and academic libraries.
A common thread in all three books is the sociological shifting of traditional gender roles in western society and how this is affecting men particularly. All three authors find the traditional male roles to stifle the ability of men to be psychologically whole. They find these traditional male roles to be social constructs rather than being biologically determined, though the latter study might be interesting. It would also be interesting to see realistic books that deal with these issues from a Christian perspective other than the knee-jerk defense of the status quo by many of the New Religious Right. It would also be an interesting study to see how computer communication, particularly the Internet, fosters male communication.
In the Company of Men identifies closely with the so-called "men's movement," as exemplified perhaps by Robert Bly. The author also attacks the traditional male role ("the silent, strong protector of the innocent") as being dysfunctional and ultimately destructive of males as well as females and calls for a redefinition of masculinity. He helps men do this through therapy and men's groups (including "wildman gatherings"), in which they are invited to work out their anger and fear that they don't know they have.
Allen states, "As the chain reaction spreads, an increasing number of men will come out of hiding. In reality it's not just gay men who have been forced to hide their true natures--virtually all men are hiding in a closet, afraid to let other people see who they are, afraid to be who they are. As more men challenge the rigidity of their gender conditioning, society's definition of masculinity will change to encompass this altered behavior. Just as we now see women as intelligent, powerful, and capable human beings, we will someday see men as empathic, compassionate, and emotionally vital human beings" (p.208-209).
None of the three books under review can be considered anti-feminist, per se, though Farrell does attack some what he sees as its excesses. In fact, the authors agree with many feminist writers that the real "enemy" is the straight jacket of traditional gender roles which imprison men just as surely as they do women. That women's liberation will not fully succeed until, ironically, men's liberation does also; and that is the topic of Farrell's iconoclastic book.
Some feminists will no doubt object, and perhaps in some cases he is excessive (and the book is 100 pages too long, something an editor should have taken care of), but his voice is one that should be heard. Again, the villain is traditional gender roles (for example, the "learned helplessness" of women and such sexist terms as "innocent women and children") which trap men in ways many have not considered. These traditional roles may have been essential for survival of the species in an earlier age, but they serve society ill now. The most obvious, of course, is the gender inequality of military service, but there are many others.
"When conservatives and liberals passively accept phrases like 'innocent women and children,' few understand how phrases like this actually keep women in their place: the more the woman accepts the innocent role, the more she requires a protector, thus reinforcing her innocence and justifying more protection. It's actually a powerful place, but it comes with a price tag: the more she needs protection, the more she seeks male chauvinists who protect her but don't respect her" (p.143).
"We have a choice. We can continue socializing our sons to fight our fires and be amazed when they fight their feelings. Or we can reach out to counter boys socialization and the socialization of girls to love the boys who pay, perform, and pursue; to stop subsidizing male child abuse in the form of football and calling it education; to develop programs to prevent men from being 95 percent of the prisoners and 85 percent of the homeless; to do for men what we would be doing for women if women used to live one year less but now live seven years less, used to be equal victims of the fifteen major causes of death and were suddenly the first victims of every one of the fifteen major causes of death" (pp.197-198).
It may be a controversial book, but it is one worth consideration.
Andrews University
The James White Library, in conjunction with the Adventist Theological Seminary, has produced a Basic Theological Bibliography: An Annotated Research and Selection Guide (BTB). There has been no such tool available since Kubo's Theological Bibliography: Basic Books for the Minister's Library published in 1977.
This new bibliography is intended to: (1) help ministers select from the many books published since 1977; (2) aid students in theological and Biblical studies; (3) assist the "Bereans" (Acts 17:11) in our church; (4) provide a selection guide for SDA bookstores; and (5) fulfill our global mission, which is to enable librarians in every corner of the earth not only to select appropriate materials, but also to catalog and classify them quicker.
Topics covered (in 95 pages) are: Theology/Christian Philosophy, Church Ministry, Old & New Testaments, Missions, and Church History. Special features include: (1) Library of Congress (LC) Subject Headings, (2) LC Classifications, (3) Dewey Classifications for libraries that use this classification system, (4) purchasing information (price, ISBN), and (5) the citations with call numbers indicate which books are available in the James White Library.
The inclusion of classification and LC subject headings may be very helpful for those near an academic library, who want to research and locate more books on a particular subject. It is possible to use the classification and go directly to the stacks, saving precious time at the OPAC (On-line Public Access Catalog); having the proper subject heading/s at hand will help begin a computer search at the nearby academic library.
The Basic Theological Bibliography. An Annotated Research and Selection Guide can be purchased for $6, which includes postage, as of February 1995 from the James White Library, Attn. Wolfhard Touchard, Referencee Librarian, Andrews University, Berrien Springs, MI 49104-1400. When ordering, please include payment in U.S. dollars.
The BTB was edited by Wolfhard Touchard, former librarian of Middle East College and the University of Eastern Africa; and Victor Figueroa-Villarreal, doctoral student at Andrews University.
The format of the BTB reflects Touchard's keen interest in mission (for over seven years).
Oakwood College
Oakwood's library recently started using the SIRSI automated system. Two modules of the OPAC (Public and Cataloging) are now in full operation. More than 50 percent of the card catalog has been converted and is now available through the online catalog.
Pacific Union College
Nelson Memorial Library won a $1,500 award from Worthington Foods to strengthen its vegetarian collection. More people than Seventh-day Adventists are interested in vegetarianism, and Worthington Foods agreed with our proposal that a strong vegetarian collection would be beneficial both to college students, faculty, and the community at large.
Secondly, the library has implemented Internet service for student and faculty use. Currently, we are using FirstSearch via the Internet on a trial basis. Those of you who are using FirstSearch regularly, please advise us if the system is reliable and comprehensive enough to shift resources to cover the cost. One way of doing that is by dropping indexes and periodical titles. The Research and Design Class from the Behavioral Science Department is using FirstSearch, and the students seem to like it.
Another library service has been added recently. We now have a satellite downlink for teleconferencing. Already, the service has generated a lot of interest and requests. The problem, as always, is how to pay for it. If your institution has this service, tell us about your budgetary provisions and procedures. So far, our colleagues in Media Services are providing technical support. However, we are concerned about the additional work load with increasing demand.
Southwestern Adventist College
Southwestern Adventist College's President's Advisory Council/Johnson County unveiled and officially presented a bronze statue to the college on Thursday, January 12. The Statue is permanently located on a granite base at the north entrance of the Chan Shun Centennial Library. Titled, "The Beginning of Wisdom," the statue depicts a professor dressed in a PhD's cap and gown holding an open book in his left hand and stretching out his right hand beckoning students and patrons to enter the college library--a place of learning.
The bronze statue is one-and-one quarter life-size, measuring seven feet, six inches above the base. "A statue just larger than life creates more impact," Artist Rick Jackson said. The statue was commissioned by the council to honor all SAC educators throughout the college's 100-year history.
Recently an accrediting team visited our campus to evaluate our total school program. The team set up residence in the Meadows Gallery of the Chan Shun Centennial Library where tables and chairs, computers, and cafeteria snacks were available for their use. They recommended several areas in the library for improvement--the addition of more staff and more technology. They were impressed with our new library facilities saying that space was no problem--we have plenty of room to expand, and seating capacity is excellent.
We like our new library and enjoy working in such beautiful surroundings. The only major glitch in the design of our library is the open atrium that goes from our marble-floored hall up to the tower above third floor. Since it is open from the hall up to third, all of the sound of talking and walking on marble is carried up to second and third floors. Although we opposed this part of the design, we wereoverruledd, and now we have to live with it. We felt the space could be better used for shelving, study carrels, or tables.
Robert Cooper (Director) invites any of you to visit their library when you are in the area, and he will personally give you a grand tour.
Walla Walla College
With special funding provided by the College Administration, Peterson Memorial Library recently completed a $30,000 computer upgrade. Complete upgrades were made for the public access workstations. One, designated for multi-media purposes, has a built-in, one-disk CD player. Students can check out CD's from the circulation desk. All the public printers were also upgraded to HP540 Deskjets.
The Reference and Access Services Office PC's were upgraded to Pentiums and Technical Services had one new PC added to their department.
Library users and staff are all excited with the faster, more up-to-date machines.
FirstSearch access, via Internet, has been a success at WWC. Students and faculty from Engineering, Social Work, and other disciplines have expressed satisfaction with the access to additional resources, especially WorldCat, FirstSearch provides. Since we subscribed to FirstSearch last year, close to 1,500 searches have been completed. We were able to fund this access through a new "electronic services" line item in the library's budget.
In a period when many libraries are cutting back on periodical subscriptions, Peterson has been able to add over 50 new titles this year. In addition, funding for new periodical titles has been built into the annual appropriation for the next two to three years.
Bibliographic Instruction took a step into the future this quarter when Carolyn Gaskell did the first in-classroom computer search demonstrations for the Writing for Engineers classes. Academic Search, CARL, and FirstSearch were highlighted. Previously, such instruction was done using handouts and overheads because the College did not have use of video projection units connected to the campus network.
The Nursing School Library on the Portland Campus recently received the college's newest network. The library now has eight 486LE Dell PC's and a laser printer. E-mail connections and access to the main campus network are both in process. Librarians at Peterson and Campus Computer Center personnel are checking on required site licenses and cost. LaserCat is already up and running on the net.
